Mansur Abdulrasul Cassam Satchu P/105/296/59

ATKINSON, CLEASBY & SATCHU ADVOCATES

The Mombasa Law Society pays tribute to Mansur Abdulrasul Cassam Satchu Advocate, one of its longest standing, distinguished and most eloquent members.

We have learnt of the demise of the late Mansur Abdulrasul Cassam Satchu Advocate with profound sadness and recognise that he has left an immense gap in the legal profession.

Mr. Satchu Advocate attended Cantab, M.A. (short for catabrigiensis, from cantabrigia, the Latin form for Cambridge University, United Kingdom) at Trinity College and was a pupil at Middle Temple. He graduated with a First Class Honours LLB Degree.

He was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1959 ranking him amongst the most senior members of the Bar not only in Mombasa but around the country as well. He practiced in the name and style Atkinson, Cleasby & Satchu Advocates and was listed as ISLN Number 909864680 (International Standard Lawyer Number (Martindale-Hubbell Alphabetical Index) https://www.martindale.com/attorney/m-satchu-1235197/ with his areas of practice being listed to be Trademarks, Patents, Admiralty, Shipping, Civil Litigation, Commercial Litigation, Contracts and Banking.

Practically all of the senior advocates who worked with him or encountered him in Court describe him as having been a brilliant litigator who thought on his feet, he was extremely eloquent and they describe him as one who had total command of the Queen’s English which he spoke like an Englishman. His Court room battles with Mr. Bill Inamdar Advocate are the stuff of legend and he is considered to have been a walking library on matters admiralty and shipping law. He applied his considerable skill time and time again with astounding effect and he did so with consummate brevity prompting Lumatete Muchai Senior Advocate to comment as follows which was echoed severally by lawyers earlier today morning thus:-

May the great Satchu rest in eternal peace. A very great lawyer. His first engagement with pleadings was to find fault and loopholes. His brevity was out of this world. Where Bill Inamdar would use one hour, Satchu would use twenty-five minutes or less. He delivered with utmost accuracy, wearing a mischievous smile by the side of his mouth. He would steal glances at the opponent to get the effect of his painful delivery. A great jurist he was!

Mr. Satchu Advocate has trained some of the leading lawyers in this country for pupillage and in their early careers including but not limited to Retired Justice Aaron Ringera, Hamid Aboo Advocate, Vincent Omollo Advocate, Kinuya Kamundi Advocate & Kinyanjui Advocate and he therefore leaves a lasting legacy on the legal profession at large.

Mr. Mansur Satchu Advocate is survived by sons Aly-Khan Satchu, Samir Satchu and Jamil Satchu. His daughters in law Nishet, Jennifer and Mitali made him a grandfather 7 times over.

The members of the Mombasa Law Society and the legal fraternity send their thoughts and sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.

Many former colleagues across the Country have contacted the Society sending messages of condolence and comments about Satchu’s skill and aptitude as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya

We are privileged to have called him our member as he led a professional life exemplar to lawyers at the Mombasa and Kenyan Bar for more than half a century.
